Be Ready For the Unexpected with These Emergency Kits

People really seem to like stories about pandemics and the zombie apocalypse.  There are so many movies, television shows, and even video games centered on people who have survived epidemics that wiped out many people on Earth. While these are all great fantasies to witness at a movie theatre or play on a next generation gaming console, they do raise a bit of issue over what you might actually want to think about should something like this happen to you.

While you are not likely to find yourself in the middle of a zombie apocalypse, you might actually need to survive a more common emergency. With that in mind, let’s take a look at some things you might need for Survival Savior emergencies.

If you are dealing with a major fire or a significant earthquake, you are going to want to have a survival kit which contains food-related items:

  • 3 days of food for each person, at least (to include fresh produce, meats, and canned soups and vegetables)
  • “high energy foods” like granola bars, peanut butter, trail mix, etc.
  • vitamins and nutritional supplements
  • at least 1 gallon of water per person (for at least 3 days)

In addition to food, you should also consider:

  • liquid bleach (for water sanitation and other cleaning)
  • a manual can opener
  • disposable cutlery/plates, etc.
  • battery-powered radio
  • cell phone
  • spare batteries
  • fire extinguisher
  • tape
  • legal documents
  • tools (hammer, wrench)

No matter what emergency you might find yourself dealing with, it could also be a good idea to have a first aid kit.  An emergency first aid kit might include:

  • various types of bandages (adhesive and roller)
  • disinfectants
  • assorted sterile gauze pads
  • cleansing agent(s)
  • latex gloves
  • scissors
  • antiseptics
  • thermometer
  • feminine hygeine products
  • OTC drugs
  • syringes

Finally, if you are a backpacker, camper, or simply travel through remote areas often, it could be a good idea to prepare a wilderness survival kit. This could include:

  • antibiotic salve
  • iodine solution
  • wire blade survival saw
  • weatherproof matches
  • firestarter tool
  • compass
  • fishing tools
  • bandages (similar items from the first aid kit)
  • nylon cord
  • dental floss
  • aluminum foil
